Recap of the 30th ASIS New York City Security Conference and Expo
November 18, 2020, brought hundreds of security and law enforcement professionals together for the first virtual conference the ASIS International NYC Chapter ran with ISC East and The Security Industry Association (SIA). An archive of the event can be viewed at the link “VIEW RECORDED CONFERENCE” above for those who could not make the conference or would like a refresher.
After brief introductions from all the various organizational leaders including Mary Beth Shaughnessy, Reed/ISC East and Don Erickson of SIA, Don Francisco, ASIS NYC Chapter Chairman, and his team welcomed everyone again, and presented the PERSON OF THE YEAR awards. Brian Reich, CPP NYC Chapter Board Member had the honor of introducing our honorees.
The first: Healthcare Person of the Year award, Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. Upon receiving the award, Dr. Fauci delivered a brief acknowledgement for the audience and spoke about the importance of staying vigilant in the fight to minimize the impacts of COVID-19. Dr. Fauci recognized the great work security professionals and first responders play in protecting New York City and our nation. He thanked the chapter for the honor and mentioned that he was especially humbled since New York City is his hometown.
Next, the New York City Police Commissioner Dermot Shea was honored as the ASIS NYC Chapter PERSON OF THE YEAR and he shared some of his observations with the audience. Commissioner Shea also emphasized the importance of identifying and addressing terrorism threats in the coming months. He spoke about how critical public-private collaboration is and specifically recognized the important role organizations like the ASIS International NYC Chapter plays in that regard.
Virtual attendees to the program were then offered two outstanding educational programs in the afternoon. Those in attendance who maintained ASIS International professional certifications were able to earn continuing education credits for their participation in the two sessions.
Education Session #1
Steve Sacchetti, Vice Chairman of our ASIS NYC Chapter and Vice President of Operations, Northeast Region, at Allied Universal Security Services directed the first session which titled: ‘Business Continuity Considerations in the “New Normal”: Processes and Technology During and After the Pandemic’ This panel discussion brought together: Craig Schwab, MBA, MA, CPP Director, Global Head of Corporate Security, BlackRock; Steve Govel, President, Service Works Inc. and Steve Bassett, Thermal Systems Project Manager, Service Works Inc.
Attendees took away ideas about best practices for going forward to minimize medical risks to persons in their workspace from vendors, contractors and other visitors entering the facility.
Education Session #2
‘Preparing for a New Era of Civil Unrest: Behavioral Factors in Civil Unrest & Collective Violence’ was the title of the second educational session, led by Steven Crimando, MA, CHPP, CTM, Principal and Founder of Behavioral Science Applications, LLC.
Attendees to the second session took away a perspective on risk indicators for collective violence and information on preparedness actions to consider in advance of civil unrest. Further, there was focus on safety and survival actions to take in violent group encounters.
The afternoon’s virtual programs concluded with several informative sessions presented by industry vendors and suppliers focused for those considering new purchases.
All of us who were involved look forward to seeing you in person in November of 2021. This will be our next joint program from ASIS International NYC Chapter, Reed/ISC East and SIA.
